Foundational Years
Students of Badminton School in Bristol find themselves part of an establishment with a storied past, having been founded in 1858 by Miriam Badock. The school’s journey began at Badminton House in Clifton, Bristol, eventually moving to its current site in Westbury-on-Trym in 1924. The school’s progressive pedagogical stance was significantly shaped under the headship of Beatrice May Baker (BMB), who advocated for internationalism, freedom of expression, and a curriculum that extends beyond traditional academics to include sports and extracurriculars.
Academic Excellence
The school boasts an impressive academic record, a testament to its focus on providing individual attention thanks to its small size. This dedication to academic rigour was highlighted in 2008 when it was ranked third among schools in the Financial Times top 1,000 schools. More recently, in the 2023 A-Levels, 48.5% of candidates achieved A*/A grades, underscoring the school’s consistent performance.
Celebrating a Century of Growth
The centenary celebrations saw the inauguration of a new Science Centre, marked by the presence of Countess Mountbatten of Burma, with Dame Sybil Thorndike as president of the school at the time. A cantata titled “The Crown of the Year” by Michael Tippett was commissioned, adding a cultural milestone to the school’s rich history.
Global Outlook and Enhanced Facilities
With a strong emphasis on fostering a European and international perspective, the school welcomes students from varied backgrounds into a cohesive community. This global approach is complemented by an array of facilities including a drama studio, music school, art studio, dance school, a 25-meter indoor swimming pool, outdoor tennis courts, and a sports hall. Extracurricular activities such as trips, Model United Nations, and debating further enrich student life.
Distinguished Alumnae
The school’s legacy is echoed in the achievements of its alumnae, including former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi; actresses Claire Bloom, Phyllida Law, and Rosamund Pike; writer Dame Iris Murdoch; and journalist Polly Toynbee, highlighting the diverse paths of success carved by its students.
