Early Years: Building the Foundation
Back in 1905, when Darlington School first opened its doors, it was a modest beginning with just 24 boys. Led by Founding Headmaster Dr. James Ross McCain, these students embarked on their educational journey in temporary quarters above the Rome Fire Department station in East Rome. A humble start, but one that laid the groundwork for what Darlington would become.
The following year, in 1906, the school moved to a new location on East Ninth Street, signaling the start of its expansion and growth.
Establishment and Growth: Setting Roots
Fast forward to 1916, when John Paul Cooper purchased DeSoto Park, the site we now call home. Spanning 500 acres, this acquisition marked a significant milestone in Darlington’s history.
By 1923, the school had settled into its current site, embracing boarding students and officially becoming a boarding and day school. This shift paved the way for an era of expansion and opportunity.
Expansion and Consolidation: Building Community
In 1973, Darlington School took another leap forward by consolidating with Thornwood School for Girls. This union not only expanded the school’s offerings but also fostered a sense of community among students. With the establishment of an elementary division and boarding for secondary school girls, Darlington became a place where students from all walks of life could come together to learn and grow.
Throughout the years, the school continued to evolve. Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs were added in 1980 and 1988, respectively, further enhancing Darlington’s commitment to early education.
Modern Era: Embracing Diversity and Tradition
Today, Darlington School stands as a beacon of educational excellence, serving approximately 850 students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. With a diverse student body representing over 20 countries, the school reflects the global community in which we live.
At Darlington, academic rigor is paramount, but so too is character development and service. These values, instilled in us from the school’s inception, guide us in all that we do.
One of the unique features of Darlington is its English public school-style house system in the Upper School. With houses for both boys and girls, this system fosters a sense of community and leadership among students, encouraging collaboration and camaraderie.
Nestled amidst scenic beauty and historic architecture, the Darlington campus is more than just a school; it’s a home away from home for students seeking a well-rounded education.
In conclusion, Darlington School’s rich history and commitment to excellence make it a cornerstone of education in Northwest Georgia. As students, we are proud to be part of this legacy, knowing that we are not only building our futures but also honoring the values of those who came before us.
