Life in Residence
At Lancing College, boarding houses form the heart of community spirit. Upon arrival, students join one of ten houses that becomes their home throughout their school years. Rather than mere dormitories, these houses serve as hubs where social bonds flourish and a genuine sense of belonging takes root through shared activities and daily interactions.
The House System at Lancing College
The ten houses—Fields, Gibbs, Handford, Heads, Manor, Saints, Sankey, School, Seconds, and Teme—function as vibrant communities where students engage in everything from sports to social events. Housemasters, housemistresses, matrons, and tutors form a supportive network that nurtures each resident. Within this structure, older students mentor younger ones while house prefects and captains step into leadership roles, creating a family atmosphere where responsibility and character naturally develop across age groups.
Integration of Boarders and Day Students
Lancing College ensures that day students integrate seamlessly with boarders. While three houses accommodate day students exclusively, others welcome both groups under one roof. This arrangement grants everyone access to the full range of opportunities—from breakfast through evening activities—regardless of their residential status. The flexibility even allows day students to stay overnight occasionally, which strengthens bonds across the entire community.
Boarding Options and Facilities at Lancing College
Boarding begins at age 13, with roughly 120 new students joining annually. The single-sex houses offer full and flexible boarding options within spaces designed to feel like home: bedrooms, study areas, kitchens, and common rooms create comfortable environments. Housemasters and housemistresses lead pastoral care teams that include assistants, matrons, and tutors who maintain a nurturing atmosphere. Academic commitments blend with extracurricular activities and leisure throughout the week, while weekends feature thoughtfully planned outings and events. The extensive grounds, including the college’s own farm, provide boarders with a secure, expansive setting for exploration and recreation.
