Foundation and Early Years
Claremont Preparatory School, which was founded in 1925 in the seaside town of Hove, began its journey with a modest enrollment of just four students. In a significant turn of events in 1945, the school moved to St Leonards-on-Sea as a result of its merger with Langley Place School. This transition brought the institution to the historic Baldslow Place, an impressive mansion constructed for the Ebden family during the 1880s. At the behest of the headmaster, Mr. A. W. Roberts, the archival records of both Langley Place and Claremont were meticulously preserved together, ensuring that the rich histories of both schools remained intertwined.
Leadership Transitions
A significant leadership shift occurred in 1951 after the passing of Mr. O’Byrne, the founder’s son. This event marked a pivotal moment in the school’s history, leading to changes in vision and direction. Subsequent heads included Mr. Dalrymple, Mr. Beddoll, and Mr. Kahn, each bringing unique perspectives and initiatives to enhance the educational experience. To honor Mr. O’Byrne’s memory, the chapel underwent extensive restoration, and a new organ was dedicated to his wife, symbolizing the school’s commitment to preserving its heritage. The tradition of the House Cup, a cherished symbol of inter-house rivalry and camaraderie, was inaugurated in 1959 by the Hamilton Light Infantry. This enduring legacy continues to be enthusiastically celebrated each Speech Day, fostering a vibrant sense of community spirit and healthy competition among the students.
Expansion and Mergers
In 1961, Claremont School transitioned into a charitable educational foundation under the chairmanship of Sir Egbert Cadbury. Four years later, Clare Cottage was constructed for younger students, and the term fee for boarders rose to 130 guineas. A merger with Summerfields Falconbury School took place in 1968, further expanding the school’s reach.
Infrastructure Developments
The 1970s brought significant challenges when a fire devastated the gymnasium and recreation center; these essential facilities were subsequently replaced with wooden structures to ensure continuity in sports and activities. By 1974, student enrollment had grown to 111, including 30 boys from the now-closed Boarzell School, illustrating the school’s increasing popularity. In 1982, Claremont became fully coeducational and introduced Saturday classes along with bus services for students, further improving accessibility and convenience for families. These developments laid a strong foundation for future growth and innovation within the school community.
Conditions and Opportunities
In 1987, Claremont School encountered a significant obstacle when a hurricane wreaked havoc on the chapel, necessitating extensive renovations to restore its historic charm. By 1990, the school proudly unveiled new nursery and sports facilities, greatly enriching the educational environment for its pupils. The “Friends of Claremont School” was founded in 1992 to enhance fundraising efforts aimed at supporting various development initiatives within the school community. In 2001, Claremont broadened its horizons by acquiring Maison Claremont in Saint-Omer, which opened up invaluable international learning experiences for its students. Following the closure of Westerleigh School in 2004, Claremont established itself as the sole independent educational institution catering to Hastings and St Leonards.
Modern Milestones
The launch of Claremont Senior School in Bodiam took place in 2011, currently accommodating over 310 students. In 2018, the school became part of the International Schools Partnership (ISP), enabling substantial investments in its infrastructure. The ambitious £3.5 million Octagon project was initiated to create new classrooms and laboratories, enhancing the learning experience. In 2021, a new building dedicated to early years and lower classes was inaugurated. Preparations are underway for the centennial celebrations in 2025, which will be accompanied by substantial investments in sports infrastructure. Currently, Claremont School serves more than 700 students and has achieved an “Outstanding” rating across all categories during Ofsted inspections for three consecutive evaluations. The school’s foundational values prioritize positivity and an unwavering commitment to ongoing improvement.
