Role of Sports at Ratcliffe

At Ratcliffe, sport sits at the heart of personal development, embodying the school’s core values: Strength of Mind, Values, and Purpose. Physical activity and teamwork become instruments that transform each student’s life, building resilience and determination. Through challenges faced together on the field, young people develop the character and drive they’ll carry beyond their school years.

Coaching Philosophy

Ratcliffe College’s coaching approach rests on RESPECT principles: resilience, excellence, sportsmanship, participation, enjoyment, commitment, and teamwork. Experienced coaches nurture talent across all age groups, supporting both ambitious athletes who pursue international achievements and those seeking an active, healthy lifestyle. This philosophy ensures everyone finds their place in the school’s sporting culture, regardless of their starting point.

Achievements and Partnerships

Through partnerships with leading regional clubs, Ratcliffe has elevated its sporting provision considerably. The school serves as the official venue for Leicestershire County Cricket Club’s youth academy, while netball partnerships with Loughborough Lightning and Charnwood bring masterclasses and additional training under recognized specialists. Similar opportunities exist through collaboration with Leicestershire County Hockey Club, which expands competitive options and connects students with top regional coaches.

Sports Facilities

Ratcliffe College offers extensive sporting infrastructure, including:

  • two all-weather pitches (for hockey, football and other games)
  • a modern indoor pool and athletics track
  • dedicated rugby and cricket fields, tennis courts
  • two sports halls, a squash court and a new fitness studio

These facilities provide excellent conditions for training and hosting high-level competitions.

Ratcliffe’s sporting programme follows seasonal cycles and accommodates students at every level—from beginners to those competing nationally:

  • Autumn: boys – rugby, girls – hockey
  • Spring: boys – hockey, girls – netball
  • Summer: boys and girls – cricket, tennis, athletics

Beyond these core sports, the school actively develops girls’ football. Senior students compete in regular Saturday and midweek fixtures, which builds competitive experience and sporting excellence.

Sports Scholarships

Available for Year 7 and Year 12 entry, these scholarships seek well-rounded athletes with strong competence in at least two disciplines. Selection involves an interview with the Director of Sport and an assessment day testing fundamental skills, fitness, and tactical thinking through exercises and game situations.
