Early History
Established in the 19th century, Cretin-Derham Hall (CDH) in Minnesota is the amalgamation of two esteemed institutions: Cretin High School and Derham Hall High School.
Cretin High School:
Founded in 1851 by Bishop Joseph Cretin, it addressed educational needs in St. Paul. During World War I, military training was added to the curriculum. By 1928, a new Cretin High School building emerged under Brother John Joseph’s leadership.
Derham Hall High School:
Sister Seraphine Ireland, CSJ, and Archbishop John Ireland founded Derham Hall in 1905, supported financially by Hugh Derham. Initially a preparatory school for young women, it separated from its college counterpart in 1914. In 1962, Derham Hall relocated to Warwick Avenue.
Merger and Modern Era
In 1986, Cretin High School and Derham Hall High School merged, forming Cretin-Derham Hall, co-sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The merger led to a larger student body of 1115 students, overseen by Sister Susan Oeffling, CSJ, and Brother Michael Collins, FSC. Richard R. Engler, the first lay president/principal, took over in 1990, initiating renovations, curriculum enhancements, and enrollment growth. Francis M. Miley, J.D., succeeded Engler in 2015.
Academic and Extracurricular Excellence
CDH offers 16 AP courses, dual enrollment with the University of Minnesota and Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, and a strong STEM program. The Leadership Academy and diverse co-curricular activities enrich students’ experiences.
International Student Program
In partnership with Amerigo Education, CDH recruits and supports international students. Amerigo manages application processing, housing, and student assistance. Options include year-long exchanges or full matriculation with a tuition of $23,000 for the 2024-2025 academic year. Housing is provided through the American International Student Service Center (AISSC).
Achievements and Recognition
CDH holds the National Blue Ribbon School award and boasts a 100% university acceptance rate. Its athletic prowess, notably in baseball, garners recognition with multiple state championships.
In essence, Cretin-Derham Hall’s legacy of academic distinction, inclusive community, and enduring traditions positions it as a distinguished institution in the Twin Cities and beyond.
