School Overview

Founding and Early Years

Brambletye School came to life in 1919, thanks to Reverend John Blencowe’s vision at Sidcup Place in Kent. By 1933, it made a significant move to Brambletye, a region more suited for a boarding prep atmosphere. The early development featured a remarkable 100-foot-long hall along with nine form rooms, an underground gym, an art room, and even an outdoor swimming pool. The top field transitioned from a simple kitchen garden into expansive playing fields, increasing its appeal to students.

Resilience During Wartime

World War II brought unexpected challenges; in 1940, the army requisitioned Brambletye School, prompting a temporary relocation to Lee Abbey, North Devon. Despite lean resources and older educators, the school persevered during the war years. Following the conflict, it returned to a dilapidated Brambletye, grappling with significant damages including burnt wood and ruined fields. However, with efforts for restoration, it resumed regular operations by late 1945.

Leadership and Growth

Post-war changes saw the Blencowes stepping down in 1947, ushering in Bob Jones as one of the first paid headmasters. The new leadership prioritised steady expansion, focusing on repairs and enhancing facilities. Under the guidance of Bob and Sybil Jones, the school evolved, fostering an environment that met the increasing demand for quality education. Their vision laid the groundwork for its modern identity.
