History

A School with a Purpose

The students of Christ’s Hospital find themselves in a school that has a deep-rooted history in England. Founded in 1552 by King Edward VI, the school was established to cater to the education and well-being of fatherless children and other poor men’s children. The school initially occupied the abandoned buildings of the Grey Friars in Newgate Street, London, reflecting its original mission to support the underprivileged.

Transformations Over Time

Throughout its long history, Christ’s Hospital has experienced significant changes. In 1902, the boys from the London and Hertford schools were relocated to a new site in Horsham, leading to a shift in the school’s structure. The Hertford site then transitioned into a girls-only school, ultimately closing in 1985. This transformation marked the establishment of a co-educational school in Horsham, representing a new chapter in the school’s evolution.

Tradition and Influence

The school’s ties with royalty and the City of London have had a profound impact on its traditions. Historically, the President of Christ’s Hospital was the Lord Mayor or an Alderman of the City of London until 1854, after which a succession of Royal Presidents followed. This connection underscores the school’s deep-seated relationships with influential entities throughout its history.

The Royal Mathematical School A significant aspect of Christ’s Hospital’s educational framework is the Royal Mathematical School (RMS), founded in 1673 under the patronage of King Charles II. The RMS was designed to prepare students for service at sea and has been shaped by prominent figures such as Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Christopher Wren, highlighting the school’s dedication to specialized education and practical skill development.

A Unique Educational Experience

Today, Christ’s Hospital continues to offer a distinctive educational experience. It combines traditional and modern teaching methodologies, encompassing academic, broader, and pastoral components in its curriculum. The school is steadfast in its commitment to social responsibility and diversity, providing free and reduced-cost places to a significant portion of its students, thus ensuring accessibility to individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds.

Resilience and Perseverance

Christ’s Hospital’s history is marked by resilience in the face of challenges, including significant events such as the Great Plague, the Great Fire of London, and both World Wars. Despite such adversities, the school has remained steadfast in its dedication to providing exceptional education and support to its students, thereby fortifying its legacy.
