History

Origins and Early Years

Darrow School, situated in New Lebanon, New York, holds a legacy stretching back to 1932. It stands on the grounds of the Mount Lebanon Shaker Village, founded in the late 18th century. The Shakers, known for their communal living, inhabited this land until the 1930s. Witnessing their decline, they collaborated with local educators, resulting in the establishment of The Lebanon School for Boys in 1930. Key figures such as Frank Boyden, Horace Taft, and George Van Santvoord played pivotal roles in this endeavor.

Transition to Darrow School

In 1938, C. Lambert Heyniger acquired the institution, renaming it Darrow School. Initially exclusive to boys, Darrow transitioned to a co-educational model in 1970. Spanning 380 acres, the campus boasts 24 buildings, 16 of which are historic Shaker structures, integral to its academic and communal ethos.

Educational Philosophy and Curriculum

Darrow School distinguishes itself through an educational ethos blending innovative classroom methods, project-based learning, and environmental awareness. Rooted in liberal arts and sciences, its curriculum aspires to shape global citizens, valuing individual talents and nurturing a sense of belonging among students.

Financial Challenges and Community Support

Despite its esteemed history and academic prowess, Darrow School grapples with financial hurdles. Recent years witnessed struggles to sustain operations due to budget constraints. In January 2024, a revelation surfaced, indicating the need to raise $5-7 million for the 2024-25 academic year. A successful fundraising campaign, uniting alumni, parents, faculty, and the local community, amassed $5.7 million, granting the school another year of operation.

Endowment and Scholarships

Darrow School’s endowment serves as a pillar for financial stability and academic excellence, primarily funding scholarships and operational needs. Named scholarships, generously established by alumni and supporters, offer vital assistance to students facing financial hardships.

Conclusion

Darrow School’s journey epitomizes resilience and the unwavering support of its community. From its Shaker origins to its present stature as a co-educational institution, Darrow prioritizes education, community, and the preservation of its historical heritage. Yet, persistent financial challenges underscore the necessity for continued backing to ensure the school’s enduring capacity to provide a distinctive and invaluable educational journey for future generations.
