Welcoming a Global Family

Dean Close School takes pride in its diverse and dynamic global family, which comprises approximately a quarter of the student body, hailing from 28 different nations. This enthusiastic contingent enriches the campus with their unique cultures and insights. At Dean Close, these international students are not merely guests; they are integral members of the student population, involved in extracurricular pursuits, academic accomplishments, and holding influential leadership roles.

Smooth Transition for International Students

To cater to the unique needs of international students and prepare them for the transition, the school organizes an International Induction Weekend in September. Overseen by the Assistant Head (International), leaders among the international students, and the School Leadership team, this initiative prepares newcomers for a successful tenure. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the Dean Close environment, campus layout, and academic expectations.

This induction includes several interactive events: a scavenger hunt across the stunning campus, sports activities, team-building exercises, sneak peeks into academic subjects, assistance with technological tools, library orientations, and social gatherings including a barbeque and tea with the Chaplain, culminating in a warm evening by the firepit.

Integration and Support

From the moment they join, international students are welcomed to voice their opinions, raise questions, and immerse themselves in campus life. Their presence is felt across the academic spectrum as well as in a host of co-curricular activities. They are fully incorporated into the house system and receive support from their House Tutor and the English Language Training department. They play pivotal roles in initiating diverse activities, notably the School Basketball Club, House Football, and the much-anticipated annual Tug-of-War contest.

English Language Proficiency and Support

At the core of their support system, the English Language Training Centre (ELT) operates with a dedicated team of three experienced teachers, delivering bespoke study programmes. These are designed to facilitate quick assimilation into the school’s fabric, ensuring both academic and social success for each student.

The ELT provides a threefold service: language instruction, academic support, and pastoral care. The tailored English Language Teaching courses aim to furnish students with the communication skills necessary for full participation in all subject areas. Academic support zeroes in on the development of specialized vocabulary and refined essay-writing abilities.

Furthermore, the ELT extends beyond academics by offering rounded pastoral care. This includes facilitating the International Induction and collaborating with the International Pupil Committee to ensure international students integrate seamlessly and take full advantage of the abundant opportunities at Dean Close School. The ELT team coordinates with subject tutors to customize support to bolster each student’s journey to achievement.
