Why Architecture at LSBU

London Southbank University draws on over a century of architectural education, tracing its lineage to London’s building schools of 1904 and 1940. Today’s infrastructure spans design studios overlooking the city, a BIM center, digital architecture and robotics lab, materials workshop, woodworking facilities, and zones for laser cutting with 3D printing. Professional accreditation from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Architects Registration Board (ARB) validates the programs, while the central location enables students to forge connections with architectural practices, bodies like Southwark Council, and heritage organizations before they graduate.

Architecture with Foundation Year

Those who don’t meet standard entry requirements but bring genuine motivation can follow a four-year route. The Architecture with Foundation Year BA (Hons) covers environmental technologies, communication of ideas, numerical methods, data modeling, and project management—groundwork that lets students transition confidently into the undergraduate program. Studio work then unfolds through sketching and site visits in year one, three projects exploring different themes and contexts in year two, and comprehensive schemes with detailed technological and structural development by year three, preparing graduates for the first stage of professional qualification.

Architecture

The three-year BA (Hons) Architecture at London Southbank University centers on project work, which accounts for more than half the assessment load and shapes the studio culture throughout. Students explore design, architectural history and theory, structures, construction, and sustainability principles while developing skills in drawing, modeling, and writing—not through memorizing precedents, but by discovering their own architectural vocabulary. The first year takes place in shared studios with emphasis on sketching and observing buildings firsthand, after which each student selects from multiple project studios ranging from urban planning to experimental forms.

Architectural Technologies at London Southbank

BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology marries creativity with engineering rigor, teaching students to translate architectural visions into functional realities. The course encompasses building design, 3D visualization, project and contract management, and heritage conservation, applying scientific principles to construction challenges. Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), it offers a direct route into the profession. Students can undertake paid placements in their third year—recent graduates have joined DHA Architecture, Robert Davies John West Ltd, and WSP—while those holding relevant college diplomas can enter directly into year three.

Master’s in Architecture

The two-year MArch Architecture represents RIBA Part 2, the second tier of professional qualification, focusing on contemporary urban conditions and how built environments relate to landscape. Structured around a studio culture of critical discourse, the program encourages students to develop innovative design responses, investigate energy-efficient technologies, produce substantial research outputs, and master progressive practice methods. Diverse project studios let each student pursue their particular interests, from social dimensions of architecture to material experimentation. Completion opens the path to gaining stage-two practical experience in architectural offices before advancing to the final RIBA Part 3 examination.
