History

Genesis and Evolution

Lucton School, situated in the heart of Herefordshire, began its educational journey in 1708, thanks to the philanthropic vision of John Pierrepont, a successful London wine merchant. Pierrepont, who amassed his wealth during the reign of Charles II, was deeply involved in charitable initiatives through the Anglican Church, leading to the creation of Lucton School among other philanthropic projects.

Initially, the school served as a grammar school for local boys, providing a solid foundation in classical studies and Anglican values. Over the years, Lucton’s reputation flourished, attracting students from beyond the local area, necessitating the expansion of its boarding facilities in 1881.

The 20th century marked a period of significant diversification for Lucton School. During the World Wars, the school welcomed students from Russia and Belgium seeking refuge and education. The establishment of the Army Cadet Force by Headmaster Vernon Pitt in 1918 was a pivotal moment, laying the groundwork for the modern Combined Cadet Force, which recently celebrated its centenary. World War II turned Lucton into a haven for evacuees from cities like Birmingham and Coventry, offering them peace amidst the chaos.

Expansion of Lucton School

The post-war era was a time of profound transformation for Lucton. A comprehensive redevelopment program was initiated, reflecting the school’s growth and the global impact of its alumni. The 1970s were particularly transformative: a junior school was opened, and, significantly, the admission of female students began.

This progressive step, supported by the goodwill of the local community, greatly increased the student population, underscoring Lucton’s commitment to inclusivity and moral values.
