Format and Learning Philosophy
Founded in 2020 by entrepreneur Hugh Vayne, who previously established leading British home education agency Minerva Tutors, the academy transformed his bold vision of professionalizing home education into a full-fledged online school where any child can succeed regardless of location. Its Flipped Learning approach has students master theory independently on Canvas before applying it through 2-3 daily live sessions focused on practice and discussion, with recordings available for review. This leaves time for sports, creativity, and family travel without interrupting education, though the school recommends staying within five hours of UK time for comfortable participation.
Minerva’s Virtual Academy Academic Programme
Following the British educational system, the academy covers years 7-13. Years 7-8 employ a three-tier structure: a core of English, mathematics, and Cambridge Lower Secondary science; an extended circle adding digital literacy, global perspectives, and foreign language; and an innovative Carousel system letting students explore short modules in art, programming, and classical civilization without year-long commitments. IGCSE dominates years 10-11, with Pearson Edexcel exams available remotely through the Remote Invigilation Service, while years 12-13 see students choosing 3-4 subjects from 14 A-Level disciplines alongside the Futures & Careers Programme. All teachers are fully qualified specialists, many having taught at Britain’s leading independent schools and serving as examiners.
Support and Development
Each student receives a personal tutor for weekly meetings, addressing both academic and personal challenges — an approach Ofsted highlighted in 2024 by noting that “wellbeing is at the heart of everything” the school does. Over 200 young athletes of 25+ nationalities train professionally in tennis, motorsport, equestrian sports, and golf while maintaining their studies through flexible scheduling and recorded lessons. The academy became the first online institution licensed to deliver the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Bronze level), which recognized that virtual environments can foster comprehensive development. Beyond academics, students join online clubs ranging from running to filmmaking, attend Enrichment Weeks with guest experts each term, and gather for in-person meetups costing £25-£80 to strengthen friendships.

Academy graduates have demonstrated outstanding results: a quarter of A-Level grades reached A or A, over half ranged from A to C, and most students entered their first-choice universities, including the University of Exeter, Manchester Metropolitan University, and America’s Lehigh University.
