Oswestry School’s Educational Journey

At Oswestry School, students embark on an educational journey tailored to meet a spectrum of learning needs from the initial Prep School years through to the culmination of A-level studies. The school’s curriculum is meticulously designed to lay a broad and balanced educational foundation, fostering a passion for learning that students carry with them long after their school days.

The Foundation: Prep School Curriculum

The formative years at the Prep School are guided by a curriculum that weaves together six principal areas: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design. This stage is hallmarked by its emphasis on building fundamental skills and knowledge, delivered through a thematic curriculum that pivots around the children’s evolving interests. Specialist teaching in PE, Spanish, music, theatre arts, and ballet enriches the breadth of learning, augmented by educational excursions, visiting speakers, and workshops.

Expanding Horizons: Senior School Curriculum

Transitioning into the Senior School, students navigate through a curriculum that balances breadth and specialization. The Lower School (First to Third Forms) introduces students to a vast array of subjects over a two-week timetable, each lesson spanning 55 minutes, underpinned by an extensive co-curricular programme. The aim is to lay a solid educational foundation. As students advance to the Upper School (Fourth and Fifth Forms), the focus narrows to core subjects—English, Mathematics, and Science—with options for detailed study in specific areas. This tailored approach is coupled with non-examined courses in Physical Education and PSHE, alongside provisions for additional support in Learning and EAL where necessary.

Specialized Study: A-Level Curriculum

The A-level stage at Oswestry School presents an opportunity for students to delve deep into their chosen subjects, setting the groundwork for higher education. The hallmark of this stage is the small class sizes, guaranteeing personalized attention and optimal learning experiences. The A-level curriculum is enriched by a diverse programme of conferences, lectures, and academic visits. Every week, an afternoon is dedicated to Games and a variety of activities, offering students a well-rounded education. Detailed information on the array of subjects offered is available in the Sixth Form Options booklet.
