Establishment and Unique Setting

Rochester Independent College (RIC), situated in Rochester, Kent, England, was founded in 1984 by mathematicians Brian Pain and Simon de Belder. Initially housed in a single terraced house, RIC has expanded to comprise 14 primarily listed buildings within a conservation area. Since 2016, it has been part of the Dukes Education Group, and its quirky mascot is the flying pig.

Educational Programs and Artistic Focus

RIC provides a range of educational programs, including A-levels, GCSEs, and retake programs. Notably, in 2020, Digital Media and Design was introduced as a subject. Emphasizing the creative arts, RIC students have achieved recognition in competitions organized by The Independent Schools Association. The college also features an artist in residence scheme and offers workshops and classes in visual arts.

Diversity and Alumni Achievements

The college boasts a diverse student body, with around 25% of sixth form students being international, representing countries such as Thailand, Italy, Spain, China, Hong Kong, Nigeria, and Russia. With a total enrollment of approximately 345 students, including about 120 boarders, RIC has a strong track record of sending its graduates to prestigious universities, with many entering the Russell Group of Universities.

Alumni Success and Connections

RIC alumni have pursued diverse career paths and achieved success in their respective fields. Some have even returned to the college as staff members. The college also maintains connections with notable individuals, such as artist and musician Billy Childish, who has served as a visiting lecturer at RIC. The college’s LinkedIn page lists 260 alumni, showcasing their varied career paths and institutions where they work or study. Graduates have gained admission to renowned universities and pursued careers in the creative industries, with some attending prestigious art schools like Central Saint Martins and UCL’s Slade School of Fine Art.

Distinct Educational Approach and Urban Campus

RIC is known for its unique educational approach, combining academic rigor with a creative atmosphere. The college is characterized by its informal setting, small class sizes, and a first-name basis between students and staff. Its urban campus is located in the historic town of Rochester, offering a rich heritage and a contemporary arts scene.
