School History

Shiplake College was established in 1959, which means it is comparatively new among British independent schools. Throughout more than sixty years, over 4,500 pupils have studied at this institution. The school accepted its initial students on May 1, 1959, led by headmaster Alexander Everett, who created an intimate and friendly atmosphere right from the beginning.

Architecture of Shiplake College

The historical Shiplake Court structure originates from 1265 and has changed ownership numerous times over the centuries. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Englefield family owned the property, which later transferred to Sir Edmund Plowden during the 16th century. The original Tudor building was torn down in 1804, while the current Victorian residence was constructed in 1890 for the Harrison family. In 1941, the BBC took ownership and occupied it until 1953, when the property was purchased for academic use.

School Development

Throughout the leadership of different headmasters, the institution has undergone significant transformation. Female students were first accepted in 1998, and from 2004 to 2019, headmaster Gregg Davies enhanced academic standards while implementing contemporary technologies. The shift toward complete co-education gained momentum in 2023, with female students now representing 42% of the total enrollment.

Current Status

The past several years have seen the addition of multiple new facilities: Gilson House for female students was inaugurated in 2009, John Turner with contemporary learning environments followed in 2014, and the Marjorie White and Davies Centre opened in 2020. Thanks to its enhanced facilities, the institution provides varied programs, encompassing rowing, aquatic activities, and wilderness education. Student enrollment hit 500 in 2022, and an ISI evaluation gave the institution top marks for scholarly performance and character formation.
