Discovering Darrow School

History and Mission

Established in 1932 as the Lebanon School for Boys and later renamed in the Shaker tradition, Darrow School holds a rich history dating back to its origins in the Mount Lebanon Shaker Village. Despite facing challenges over the years, including significant fires in 1963 and recent financial struggles, Darrow School remains steadfast in its mission to serve students with diverse backgrounds and talents. Rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, the school aims to inspire enduring confidence for success in college and life through an active curriculum and environmental consciousness.

Academics and Student Life

Darrow School adopts a hands-on, minds-on, hearts-open approach to education, offering dynamic labs, projects, and presentations across various subjects. With a small student-to-teacher ratio of 4:1 and an average class size of 8-9 students, personalized attention and support are ensured. The curriculum is active, differentiated, and inclusive, with over 150 courses and electives catering to diverse learning styles and backgrounds. The student body, comprising 110 students from 15 states and 14 countries, embodies values of growth, diversity, community, compassion, and authenticity.

Athletics and Extracurricular Activities

Students actively participate in a range of competitive and non-competitive sports such as cross-country, soccer, basketball, and lacrosse, alongside extracurricular clubs like outdoor education, mixed martial arts, alpine skiing, and esports. This diverse array of activities fosters a vibrant and inclusive community where all students feel a sense of belonging.

Financial Information

Tuition fees for boarding students range from $67,950 to $68,315 for the academic years 2023-2025, while day students face tuition costs of $42,800 to $42,850. Financial aid, primarily need-based, is available but limited. Additionally, students are required to have a Student Drawing Account (SDA) for various expenses, with annual costs ranging from $1,000 to $2,800.

Despite facing financial challenges, Darrow School remains a unique and historic institution committed to providing a comprehensive and inclusive education that prepares students for future success.
