Description

International school in a well-known Madrid district with over 60 years of history and students from 60 countries.

About the School

Located in Pozuelo-de-Alarcón, just 10 kilometers from the heart of Madrid, American School of Madrid occupies a large 4.5-hectare campus that houses spacious learning buildings and athletic facilities. Since its founding in 1961, the school has prepared students for admission to world-leading universities, now serving over a thousand children from approximately 60 nations—a third American, a third Spanish, with the remainder representing diverse corners of the globe.

Achievements

In 2025, graduates achieved an average IB score of 34.5—nearly 4 points above the global mean—with students scoring above 40 at three times the worldwide rate. Their success translated into 67 offers from top-100 global universities and 123 from top-100 U.S. institutions, including King’s College London, UCL, University of California-Berkeley, Cornell, and Columbia.

Education

American School of Madrid organizes its education across three stages for young learners, adolescents, and seniors. All graduates earn a U.S. diploma, while also having the option to pursue IB and Spanish pathways.

Learning stages:

  • Lower School (3-11 years) — elementary level
  • Middle School (11-14 years) — middle school
  • Upper School (14-18 years) — senior classes with U.S. High School Diploma, Spain’s Official Program, IB Diploma program

Extracurricular Life

The school has 54 teams across nine sports—from basketball and football to track and cheerleading—competing in local and international ISSA and IBERIA leagues. Meanwhile, creative clubs thrive across various disciplines: musicians regularly perform at concerts and European festivals, while actors stage productions in the school’s own experimental theater.

Other extracurricular opportunities:

  • Model United Nations — diplomatic club
  • Middle Earth Players — theater troupe
  • The Lancer Scoop — school journalism
  • Musical ensembles (choir, orchestra, jazz band)
  • National Honor Society — honors community

American School of Madrid Campus

In 2021, the school opened a zero-energy middle school building designed to support interaction and movement, followed by a 2023 children’s park recognized as one of Europe’s most thoughtful school play spaces. Today’s infrastructure encompasses science laboratories, two gymnasiums, a fitness center, and gymnastics halls, while the arts center features a 600-seat auditorium, music and drama studios, and a small theater for experimental performances.
