Extracurricular Activities

Clubs for Every Interest

American School of Madrid runs its extracurricular program from October through May, with sessions held twice weekly after regular classes. Students who rely on school transportation can catch a dedicated bus at 5:15 PM. While the school covers most club fees, parents pay instructors directly for rock climbing, golf, ballet, tap dance, karate, and private music lessons.

The program includes everything from Lego-based robotics and film club to yoga, hydroponics, and crochet. Chess, table tennis, Minecraft, and American flag football round out the offerings, giving kids chances to explore new interests while building friendships beyond their usual classroom circle.

Club examples:

  • Sports and Movement: Pickleball, Rock Climbing, Karate, Yoga
  • Creativity and Technology: Film Club, Lego Robotics, Crochet
  • Environment and Science: Sustainability, Hydroponics
  • Games and Strategy: Chess, Table Tennis, Minecraft
  • Team Activities: American Flag Football, Ballet, Tap Dance

Sports and Music at American School of Madrid

Fifty-four teams across nine sports—basketball, soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, cheerleading, golf, track and field, flag football, and fitness—represent the school. More than half compete in local and international leagues like Pozuelo Sports League, Copa Colegial, and IBERIA League. The music program brings together choir, concert band, string ensemble, and jazz ensemble in the upper grades, where rehearsals are regularly recorded and performances take students to festivals throughout Spain and beyond.

Interest-Based Clubs and Communities

Middle schoolers can join eight clubs, including the theater group Middle Earth Players, Model United Nations, volunteer-focused Caring Hands, chess and running clubs, Lancer Leadership Council, and Yearbook. High school students have access to an even broader range—from Art Leadership Club and Community Connections (which partners with a local school for students with developmental differences) to Environmental Club, Global Citizens Club, and the school newspaper The Lancer Scoop.

Club examples:

  • Social Initiatives: Alternative Society, Community Connections, Caring Hands
  • Academic: Model United Nations, Philosophy Club, Medicine and Science Club
  • Media and Creativity: The Lancer Scoop newspaper, Yearbook, Art Leadership Club
  • Discussion and Leadership: Debate, Lancer Leadership Council
  • Environment and Science: Eco Club, Global Citizens Club

TEDx and Debate

American School of Madrid regularly hosts TEDxYouth events—in 2025, students from the World of Work program led preparations for a conference centered on human behavior. The student-founded Speech & Debate Club has grown into something more ambitious: its members travel to international tournaments, maintain their own website and LinkedIn presence, and gain access to competitions abroad where they develop public speaking skills.
