Description

Aspen Heights British School

A British school in Abu Dhabi that opened in September 2017, joining the International Schools Partnership — a global community spanning more than 80 schools across 22 countries. It serves students from kindergarten through Year 13, blending British curriculum traditions with the International Baccalaureate programme for senior years.

School Profile

Situated in Al Bahya’s growing residential district, the campus integrates gardens, ecological features, and open spaces into its design. Students progress through the British National Curriculum from ages 3-4 until Year 11, after which they transition to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme — Aspen Heights became an accredited IB World School in 2023. Personalised learning drives everything here, supported by progress monitoring systems, online portfolios, and international benchmarking tests that track each student’s development against global standards.

Achievements

Among Abu Dhabi’s few schools with Google for Education status, Aspen Heights provides Chromebooks from Year 1 onwards, while interactive boards, iPads, and augmented reality tools strengthen its digital infrastructure. This commitment earned recognition at the 2024 Mentl Awards for its mental health ambassador programme, plus a Silver Award from Carnegie Centre of Excellence. Meanwhile, students tend the on-site hydroponic greenhouse, raising vegetables alongside turtles, fish, and chickens — hands-on initiatives that make environmental concepts tangible.

Academic Programme

British National Curriculum standards guide teaching from kindergarten through Year 11, followed by the IB Diploma Programme for Years 12-13. Native English-speaking teachers with British and international experience create an environment where conceptual and inquiry-based methods let students direct their learning, tackling challenges collaboratively. Literacy development draws on Pie Corbett’s talk-for-writing approach and structured oracy programmes, including debates and presentations. Arabic begins in kindergarten for both native and non-native speakers, while French starts in Year 3, with Arabic lessons integrated into English sessions for curriculum coherence.

Beyond the Classroom

From Year 1, students access clubs that rotate each term — football, basketball, swimming, and badminton utilise the indoor sports hall, two astroturf pitches, padel court, dual swimming pools, and dance studio, with Athleta Sports extending offerings into weekends. Creative and academic options include art and craft, music, drama, choir, chess, ecology, IT, Arabic storytelling, science, and gardening, developing curiosity and teamwork. Educational trips to the National Aquarium, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Yas Marina Circuit, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and Emirates Park Zoo build independence and critical thinking, while leadership programmes see primary students join the school council, secondary students the executive student council, and Year 10s become prefects or mental health ambassadors supporting their peers.
