Founding of Bedales School
In 1898, Bedales made history by becoming fully co-educational, a bold move that set a precedent for gender equality in education. By 1916, the school had established one of the first student councils, underscoring the belief in giving students a voice in the school’s decision-making process.
The 2023 state exam results were a testament to students’ hard work and the school’s commitment to academic excellence, with high scores in A Levels and GCSE/BAC exams.
Bedales School Campus
Situated in the picturesque Hampshire countryside, the campus spans 120 acres of farmland, woodlands, orchards, and playing fields. Since relocating here in 1900, the school has created a harmonious blend of traditional and modern architecture.
The campus boasts historic buildings like Lupton Hall and the Memorial Library, both Grade I listed, alongside modern facilities such as a full-size astro-turf pitch with floodlighting, a sports hall, an indoor swimming pool, and extensive IT resources. Additionally, there is a “Quiet Place” for reflection, open to students of all faiths.
Innovative Curriculum
Bedales is divided into three sections: Bedales Nursery & Pre-prep, Dunannie (ages 3-8), Bedales Prep, Dunhurst (ages 8-13), and Bedales Senior School (ages 13-18). The curriculum is designed to nurture independent thinking and intellectual rigor.
Alongside I/GCSE subjects, Bedales offers Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs), which provide a well-rounded and comprehensive education. In the sixth form, students enjoy the freedom to choose from innovative courses like digital photography and music technology A Levels.
Extracurricular Activities and Boarding
A well-rounded education is highly valued, and the wide range of extracurricular activities reflects that. The Bedales Prep Boarders program includes evening activities and weekend trips, encouraging students to engage in choirs, orchestras, bands, theater productions, and school publications.
The sports program is extensive, complemented by academic societies, a community service program, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. The cricket program includes competitive matches and annual tours.
Boarding at Bedales is flexible, with options for full, half, and flexible boarding. The recently renovated boarding house accommodates 40 students, with separate dormitories for boys and girls, as well as senior residences. Mixed-age dormitories foster mentorship and community spirit. Weekend activities for boarders include cultural outings and school events, ensuring a vibrant and engaging school life.
