Academic Excellence

Founded in 1850, Bradfield college operates as an independent co-educational school in the Berkshire village of Bradfield, where around 810 pupils between 13 and 18 pursue their studies. The college builds its reputation on a diverse curriculum paired with exceptional co-curricular programmes, creating an environment where academic rigour meets broad personal development.

What is Faulkner’s at Bradfield college

Faulkner’s boarding house serves as a dedicated space where Year 9 students transition smoothly from preparatory education into Bradfield’s academic culture. Its curriculum emphasizes essential competencies—complex problem solving, self-regulation, presentation skills, digital literacy, and critical thinking—through an interdisciplinary framework. This approach spans five learning domains: environment and sustainability, languages and culture, individuals and society, mathematics in action, and creative and literary arts.

Years 10 and 11: Comprehensive Curriculum

During Years 10 and 11, students at Bradfield follow core subjects including mathematics, sciences, English literature, English language, and a modern language, while PE and wellness remain non-examined components. They select additional options from aesthetics, languages, humanities, and other disciplines, with a specialized SBS curriculum available for music. Progression to sixth form typically requires grade 6 across six subjects, though certain A Level or IB subjects may demand higher thresholds.

Sixth Form at Bradfield college

The sixth form presents two pathways: the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the linear A Level route. IBDP candidates study six subjects—three at higher level, three at standard—alongside core elements such as Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service. Meanwhile, the A Level programme allows students to focus on three subjects, with Further Mathematics available as an optional fourth, and includes the Extended Project Qualification.

Additional Academic Opportunities

Beyond standard curricula, Bradfield college provides several enrichment initiatives: the Bradfield Horizons programme guides students through career planning and higher education preparation, while the Support and Study Skills Department offers tailored assistance. The Minerva programme, English as an Additional Language support, and platforms showcasing exceptional student work further enhance the academic experience. The college also recognizes achievements across GCSE, IBDP, and A Level examinations.
