House System

Canford School is all about one school with ten houses, each with its own vibe. It’s like a big family where everyone, whether you’re here during the day or staying overnight, is part of this cool philosophy we all share.

House Distribution and Weekend Life

So, there are ten houses in total – four for the guys and three for the girls. They’re right here on the school grounds, kind of like separate hangout spots for the boys and girls, just a short walk away from the main school buildings. About 65% of us are full-time boarders, and even though we don’t do the weekly or flexi-boarding thing, we can head home during each term if we want. But, you know what? Most of us, like over 80%, choose to stick around on weekends. And during those ‘A’ weekends, literally everyone is on board.

Weekend Activities

Weekends are pretty awesome here. There’s a bunch of stuff to do, like hitting up the sports facilities or just chilling with your buddies in the house. Some of us use it to catch up on homework or just relax.

The Role of Housemasters and Housemistresses

Now, let’s talk about the real MVPs of the boarding life – the Housemasters and Housemistresses. These guys live right there with us, and you can bug them anytime. They’re not just there to keep an eye on us; they’re like our mentors, guiding us through the academic and life stuff. They’re also into teaching and coaching sports, making sure we get the full package of growing up.

Live-In Tutors and Their Role

Then there’s the Live-In Tutor, always there to help out the Shells (that’s Year 9 for you). So, if you’re struggling with homework or need some academic backup, they got your back.

Evening Tutors and Their Contribution

But wait, there’s more! Evening Tutors – these subject whizzes show up one night a week, bringing their own flavor to the house. Two of them take care of the 4th and 5th Forms, giving us a hand when we need it.

Matrons: The Superheroes of the House

And let’s not forget the Matrons, the superheroes of the house. They’re there from the crack of dawn till 7 pm, handling all our questions and making sure everything runs smooth in the house. They’re like the go-to people for everything, making sure we’re all good.

House Composition and Community Spirit

In each house, there’s a gang of around 60 of us, with about 12 in each year group from Year 9 to Upper Sixth. It’s a mix of ages, from 13 to 18, and it’s like this big, tight-knit community where we all look out for each other and grow together. It’s pretty awesome, not gonna lie.
