Why Finance in Cardiff

The Cardiff University Business School holds accreditation from leading professional bodies including CIMA, ICAEW, AACSB, and AMBA, which translates into certification advantages and stronger career prospects for graduates entering the financial sector. Beyond its industry recognition, the institution ranked second nationally for research impact in REF 2021, earning top marks for its academic environment—meaning students learn from faculty whose work actively shapes contemporary financial theory and practice.

Accounting

The BSc Accounting combines professional accreditation with hands-on training across financial and management accounting, corporate finance, taxation, and audit. Each module develops not just technical competence but also the ability to evaluate social, economic, and ethical dimensions of financial decisions. Parallel to coursework, workshops run in partnership with accounting firms and accrediting bodies expose students to real cases and scenarios, helping them enter the job market with confidence upon graduation.

Banking and Finance

Banking and Finance (BSc) applies economic theory to financial analysis through mathematical, statistical, and computational tools used in portfolio management, price forecasting, and risk assessment. From first year, students work in a 65-terminal trading floor, tackling modules like “Stock Market Trading” and “Responsible Banking.” Later years add econometrics and electives aligned with career goals, with options for a placement year or time abroad between second and final year.

Financial Mathematics at Cardiff University

Financial Mathematics (BSc) merges rigorous mathematical training with sector-relevant skills in high-frequency trading, fund management, and complex systems analytics. Classes take place in the new Abacws building, which houses a simulated trading floor where students practice market operations. The third year includes an individual project allowing them to apply mathematical knowledge to self-directed research. The programme carries IMA accreditation from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

Finance and FinTech

The Finance with Financial Technology (MSc) examines where traditional finance meets emerging technology—covering AI in finance, big data analytics, investment management, and corporate finance in ways that prepare graduates for both established investment firms and fintech startups. Sessions occur in one of Britain’s largest trading floors, with 56 workstations, where students can pursue Bloomberg certification and write dissertations addressing real fintech challenges. Alumni work at London Stock Exchange Group, Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, and JP Morgan.

Accounting and Finance

The Accounting and Finance (MSc) tackles contemporary issues within an international framework, helping students transition from national undergraduate preparation to global professional perspectives by integrating research with cross-border case studies. Core modules span corporate reporting, management accounting, and corporate finance, emphasizing ethical and social dimensions of decision-making. With ACCA and AACSB accreditation, the programme delivers professional advantages in certification and placement within senior roles at multinational companies.
