Navigating Charterhouse School Admissions: A Guide for Prospective Students
Charterhouse School, recognized as one of the top independent boarding and day schools in the UK, offers a robust and holistic admissions process designed to welcome a diverse group of academically driven students.
Year 9 Entry: Laying the Foundations
Entry Routes: Charterhouse encourages applications for Year 9 from students in Years 6, 7, and 8. The school’s approach is academically selective, centering around a competitive assessment, an interview, and a detailed reference from the applicant’s current school.
Assessment and Selection: Beginning with the ISEB Common Pre-Test which spans English, Maths, and Reasoning, the school sets a high bar for prospective students. Performance in this initial computerized test, complemented by a reference, determines who progresses to the next phase. This phase involves an Activity Afternoon designed to assess candidates holistically and an informal interview, immersing applicants in the school environment. Successful candidates receive offers by the end of the Spring Term of Year 6, under the expectation of passing the Common Entrance with confidence.
Scholarships: For those with exceptional talents, Charterhouse offers Foundation Scholarships at 13+, evaluating candidates on subjects including Mathematics, English, and Science. Specialized scholarships in areas such as art/DT, drama, dance, music, and sports are also available, recognizing diverse talents.
Making the Leap to Sixth Form
Academic Expectations: The leap to Sixth Form is significant, with Charterhouse setting high academic standards. Prospective students are expected to demonstrate excellence in their (I)GCSEs, achieving a considerable number of grades 8 and 9.
Selection Process: The admissions procedure for Sixth Form candidates involves participating in an Assessment Day, which includes the Charterhouse Standard Test in English and tests in three subjects of the candidate’s choice. This is followed by an interview, offering a comprehensive evaluation of each candidate. Offers are then extended on December 1.
Scholarships: At the Sixth Form level, academic prowess can be recognized through the Sir Robert Birley Academic Scholarships and Exhibitions. The school also awards Honorary Foundation Scholarships at the end of the Sixth Form, available to new students who have shown remarkable ability.
