Introduction to Extracurricular Life at Charterhouse School
A key part of life at Charterhouse School is the vibrant and diverse array of extracurricular activities. These activities are more than just leisure; they are seamlessly woven into the fabric of our educational philosophy, designed to cultivate leadership, creativity, physical well-being, and of course, teamwork and enjoyment among students.
The Wide Array of Activities
With over 80 different sports and activities on offer, students at Charterhouse have the liberty to pursue existing passions or dive into new adventures. Whether it’s through utilizing the exceptional on-campus facilities for outdoor pursuits or engaging in creative endeavors like music and drama, the opportunities are vast. Importantly, many of these clubs and activities are student-led, presenting real chances for us to develop leadership skills.
Floreat: The Four Pillars
Our co-curricular program, aptly named Floreat—which translates to “may it flourish”—is a cornerstone of Charterhouse’s broad educational ethos. This program is categorized into four main pillars:
- Create: This pillar encourages artistic and musical expression through various mediums such as textiles, filmmaking, podcasting, and even robotics.
- Think: Focused on intellectual engagement, it offers avenues like philosophy groups, debate societies, and astronomy clubs for deep scholarly thought.
- Play: Here, emphasis is on strategy, interpersonal skills, and enjoyment through risk-taking and innovative activities.
- Be: Concentrating on personal growth, this aspect deals with life skills, well-being, spiritual growth, and social justice issues.
Sports at Charterhouse
Sports play a significant role in our school life, with core sports designated for boys and girls by term. Boys focus on football, hockey, cricket, and tennis, while girls’ core sports include hockey, football, netball, and tennis. Participation is highly encouraged and often expected, though alternatives can be arranged. Beyond these core sports, Charterhouse also offers an array of non-core sports such as badminton, climbing, fencing, and water polo, catering to a wide range of interests and abilities.
Our sports facilities span 250 acres, featuring numerous pitches, courts, and even a fitness center, supporting a healthy and active lifestyle. The competitive spirit is alive with inter-school and inter-house competitions, making sports an integral part of our school identity.
Conclusion: A Balanced Education
In essence, the extracurricular program at Charterhouse is designed to enhance the academic curriculum, ensuring students receive a well-rounded and holistic education. The wide variety of clubs, societies, and sports available attest to a philosophy that values the development of the whole person, fostering a balanced and enriched school experience for all.
