Music Department

Music draws students of all ages at Fyling Hall School, where they master various instruments and perform regularly. A dedicated building provides rehearsal spaces, a recording studio, and diverse equipment, while the Barn Theatre seats up to a hundred spectators. Beyond regular classes, pupils take private lessons in piano, voice, violin, drums, guitar, and winds. The choir, which appeared on BBC’s “Songs of Praise” and earned local awards, performs at major events. Many graduates continue to music colleges or form their own bands.

Theatre and Drama at Fyling Hall School

Drama has deep roots here—former headmistress Mrs. White was a professional actress, and her legacy endures. Senior students explore classics like “Pygmalion” and Brecht alongside contemporary works such as “100” in the Barn Theatre, which features professional equipment. Productions are integral to school life, with annual musicals like “Grease” and “Annie,” plus Christmas shows for younger pupils. Students regularly compete at the Eskdale festival, where they’ve won numerous prizes in group drama, poetry, and solo Shakespearean monologues over the past decade.

Art Studio

The art studio at Fyling Hall School is a spacious room open throughout the day. It features a ceramics kiln, printing press for various techniques, and research computers supporting diverse projects. Senior students can specialize in photography, fine art, or ceramics at A-Level, often drawing inspiration from local landscapes. Student work constantly rotates on studio walls, while each summer brings A-Level graduate exhibitions open to the community. Children’s drawings, sculptures, and ceramics adorn corridors throughout the building.

Creative Events

Each summer, Fyling Hall School hosts the Rose Garden festival—a community celebration raising charity funds. Local and professional acts perform against Yorkshire coast views, with food and entertainment for all ages. The Eskdale festival, established in 1903, sees students competing from primary through graduation in music, drama, dance, and spoken word. Many win first places. Graduates have entered ACM in Guildford, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, and Wilkes Academy, reflecting the school’s creative standards.
