Description

Founded in 1847 by Prime Minister William Gladstone, this British co-educational boarding school sits amid Scotland’s dramatic landscape of mountains and lochs. The institution welcomes around 350 pupils aged 12 to 18, with nearly equal numbers of boys and girls—over 80% of whom board full-time, creating an immersive seven-day learning environment that includes Saturday classes and Sunday activities.

School Profile

The 330-acre Perthshire campus blends Victorian heritage with modern facilities. Historic buildings from the mid-19th century—including an 1851 chapel, 1906 library, and 1890s teaching blocks—stand alongside exceptional sports grounds for rugby, football, hockey, and cricket, plus a 9-hole golf course. Seven boarding houses (four for boys, three for girls) complete the grounds, while the diverse community draws students from 16 countries alongside British pupils, with nearly all graduates progressing to universities like Bristol, Durham, St Andrews, Oxford, and Cambridge.

Academic Programme and Structure

Students follow either three A Levels with an additional qualification or five Scottish Highers, with exams at the end of their first year in the senior school. They begin with Years 7-8, move through GCSE in Years 9-10 (choosing three from ten optional subjects), then progress to their chosen pathway. Each pupil joins a house-based mentoring group, meeting their tutor three times weekly to set realistic goals, while Morrisby psychometric testing guides subject choices and career planning from Third Form onwards.

Achievements

In Scottish Highers, students achieved 100% A grades across Classical languages, Computing, Italian, Music, and Spanish at both Higher and Advanced Higher levels. During its first year offering Advanced Higher, the college saw 60% of all results graded at the top A level, while 24% of pupils secured straight As across all their Higher subjects. Beyond academics, 98% of students earn Distinction in LAMDA exams, and the pipe band—performing in full ceremonial dress since 1878—trains around 60 pipers and drummers annually.

Extracurricular Life

The sports programme rotates by term: autumn brings rugby and hockey, spring continues with hockey and lacrosse, while summer offers cricket and tennis. Football, athletics, golf, sailing on Loch Earn with the college’s own fleet, and equestrian activities through local stables with Pony Club-accredited instructors round out the options. Meanwhile, the 200-seat theatre hosts musicals and classic plays, LAMDA classes offer UCAS-point-worthy acting training, and the music school enables performances in Scottish cathedrals and participation in national youth orchestras, complemented by international exchanges with partner schools across three continents.

Boarding

With more than 80% living on campus, this is genuinely a boarding community. Each of the seven houses accommodates up to 60 students and fosters lifelong bonds, led by a housemaster or housemistress who lives there with their family. Lounges, kitchens, games rooms, and study areas with Wi-Fi throughout create home-like spaces, recently enhanced by 300 eco-friendly Button & Sprung mattresses. Day pupils integrate fully into house life, staying overnight when needed and using free school buses.
