Originally conceived to prepare young men for ministerial roles, it gradually evolved to include female students by 1840. Over the years, it underwent name changes, transitioning from the Ashtabula County Institute of Science and Industry to the Grand River Institute before finally adopting its current name, Grand River Academy.
