Why Engineering at LSBU

London Southbank University’s engineering reputation rests on consistent performance across national rankings and graduate outcomes. Mechanical Engineering secured fifth place nationally in the Guardian League Tables 2026, while topping student satisfaction metrics in the Complete University Guide. Chemical Engineering similarly earned top-five recognition for student experience, reflecting the quality of academic support. Graduates regularly join Pfizer, GSK, Dow, and Chevron, while current students have won the Mayor’s Entrepreneur Programme, South Bank Ignite, and Engineers Without Borders—the latter leading to fieldwork in South Africa developing sustainable traffic lights for areas with unstable power supply.

Mechanical Engineering at London Southbank University

The Mechanical Engineering course prepares specialists for challenges spanning energy, transport, robotics, and pharmaceuticals. Students encounter foundational principles before applying them through hands-on work with advanced equipment: virtual engineering laboratories, 3D printers, CNC machines, waterjet cutting systems, wind turbines, and solar installations. Industry-standard software—Adobe Creative Suite, ANSYS, Autodesk, MATLAB—remains accessible both on campus and remotely.

Real projects begin early, with students receiving company briefs, entering competitions, and visiting production sites. Beyond the academic curriculum, the Formula Student team competes in annual national races, while Aim93—focused on human-powered transport—attracted documentary coverage from a BAFTA-winning filmmaker.

Chemical Engineering

The four-year MEng Chemical Engineering programme—the highest undergraduate degree in the UK—incorporates an optional placement year after the third year. It concentrates on designing processes that balance environmental responsibility, safety, and commercial viability, spanning renewable energy to oil and gas. Students explore thermodynamics, chemical reactions, separation processes, and production management through laboratory work and computational modeling.

The structure progresses deliberately: the first year establishes engineering fundamentals, the second examines core operations, the third addresses safety management and sustainability, while the fourth develops research and advanced design capabilities. The final group project encompasses a complete industrial process—from raw materials to finished product—incorporating cost assessment, environmental impact, and optimization.

Structural Engineering

The Structural Engineering (MSc) programme covers advanced analysis and design of steel, concrete, timber, and composite structures under dynamic conditions. Students engage with modules including ground foundation design, finite element methods using Abaqus software, masonry-timber engineering, and seismic building resistance.

The course holds Engineering Council accreditation, which streamlines professional Chartership qualification. Students work with current structural analysis software—Robot, Revit, and Abaqus—while completing a final project that may take either research or design form.
