Team Sports
The approach to team sports follows seasonal patterns, with girls playing hockey in autumn, lacrosse in spring, and tennis in summer, while boys focus on rugby in autumn, hockey in spring, and cricket during the summer months. Despite competing against much larger institutions, the program consistently produces athletes who represent their regions and nation. Students from Years 2 through 5 participate in their season’s primary sport, though older pupils can explore alternatives while many choose to continue with team competitions.
Golf Academy at Loretto School
Founded in 2002 as the first academy of its kind within a British independent boarding environment, Loretto Golf Academy operates through three pathways: Performance Squad for those pursuing professional careers, Development Squad for competitive play, and Club Squad for social engagement. The academy runs its own Loretto Junior Golf Tour comprising six tournaments recognized by WAGR and EGR systems, which gives talented players experience in multi-day competitions along Scotland’s coastline. Over two decades, participants have secured 14 national titles, with dozens progressing to American collegiate programs.
Additional Opportunities
Beyond core disciplines, younger and senior students can explore various alternative sports across the 85-acre campus, which features a Sports Hall with four badminton courts, 12 tennis courts, and AstroTurf surfaces. Infrastructure includes dedicated netball courts, indoor and outdoor Golf Academy facilities, a modern fitness suite, and a specialized conditioning hall that enables year-round training.

Development Philosophy
A former Scotland rugby captain and British Lion leads the athletic program alongside specialists who guide students throughout their journey from early years to graduation. The philosophy emphasizes fair play and respect for opponents as essential as victory itself, encouraging lifelong participation beyond school clubs. Talented athletes receive targeted support through specialized training camps, personalized strength sessions with qualified coaches, and opportunities to compete at elevated levels.
