History

History of Rochester Independent College

Rochester Independent College (RIC) was established in 1984 by mathematicians Brian Pain and Simon de Belder. Initially known as Rochester Tutors, the college started primarily as a sixth form, teaching A levels and retakes. Over the following three decades, the college expanded its campus to 14 (mainly) listed buildings in the heart of Rochester and evolved its educational offerings.

Founding and Development

The college was founded with the vision of providing an alternative to traditional education. The founders secured a loan of £40,000 to purchase the most derelict building they could find, which became the first site of the college at 25 Star Hill. The college’s logo, representing a Thames Sailing Barge set within Rochester Castle, has been a symbol of the institution for much of its history.

Expansion and Recognition

RIC grew from its original house to occupy 14 mostly listed buildings, creating a connected campus with sufficient land for development. The college has been recognized for its unique approach to education and has maintained a strong community of former students, parents, staff, and friends who continue to engage with the college.

Educational Philosophy

The college’s educational philosophy emphasizes a colorful and vibrant learning environment. It has a tradition of growing its own teachers, with some former students returning to join the staff. RIC specializes in helping students achieve their desired grades in a supportive atmosphere where asking questions and seeking help is encouraged.

Campus and Facilities

RIC’s campus started with one terraced house and expanded as the school grew. The college’s facilities now include a theatre, science labs, and a visual arts center set to open in 2023, which will be named The Gowers Building in honor of the late Art teacher Pete Gowers.

Affiliations and Accreditations

RIC is affiliated with the Independent Schools Council (ISC) and is a member of the Independent Schools Association. It is also part of the Dukes Education Group, which began supporting the college’s development in 2016.

Curriculum and Student Body

The college offers a wide range of subjects, with nearly 40 available at A level. It also provides intensive one-year GCSE and A Level courses, as well as retake programs. The Lower School, which opened in 2007, is non-selective and has a maximum of 12 students per class.

RIC has a diverse student body, with approximately 70% from the UK and 30% international. The college is known for its informal atmosphere, lack of uniform, and small class sizes, which contribute to its reputation as a stepping stone between school and university.

Project 2025

RIC’s Project 2025 involves transformative plans for campus development, supported by significant investment from Dukes Education. This project aims to offer boarding for younger students and improve facilities across the Star Hill campus.

Notable Alumni and Staff

The college has had notable alumni and staff, including Dr. Sheetal Patel, who became an advisor at RIC after being a student there, and former students who have gone on to become admissions administrators and teachers at the college. Former tutors include BAFTA award-winning film director Clio Barnard and artist and musician Billy Childish.

RIC continues to be a unique educational institution that values both academic and creative achievements, offering a supportive and friendly environment for its day and boarding students.
