As students of Roedean School, they embrace the rich history of this institution and the enduring legacy of its founding principles.
The Early Years
Founded in 1885 by the Lawrence sisters, Penelope, Dorothy, and Millicent, Roedean School initially bore the name Wimbledon House and offered education to merely 10 pupils. The sisters sought to provide a holistic education that encompassed physical, intellectual, and moral development, advocating for girls to have access to education equal to that afforded to boys.
Founding Principles
The school’s founding principles were centered around promoting healthy living, fostering strong academic foundations, nurturing a love for sports and culture, encouraging independent thought and character, preparing students for university and careers, and instilling a strong sense of personal and moral values.
Relocation and Influence
In 1898, Roedean School moved to its current location on Roedean Way, except during World War II when it was temporarily relocated to Cumbria as a Naval Torpedo training base. Today, Roedean has earned a strong reputation, particularly in STEM subjects, with a substantial number of students pursuing STEM-related fields at the university level. The school also shares a historical connection with a sister institution in South Africa, founded by the youngest Lawrence sister, Theresa, in 1903.
Campus and Acclaim
Situated on a cliff overlooking Brighton Marina and the English Channel, Roedean is esteemed as one of the top all-girls boarding schools in the UK, akin to Eton College. The school’s motto, “Honneur aulx dignes” (Honour the worthy), epitomizes its commitment to excellence. Roedean is a member of the Girls’ Schools Association and the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) and has been rated as Excellent in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Notably, it boasts impressive A-Level results and features state-of-the-art facilities, including a theatre, dance studios, music classrooms, a swimming pool, a golf course, and a private tunnel to the beach, among others, following significant investments.
A Legacy of Excellence
Throughout its history, Roedean School has produced a host of distinguished alumni and remains dedicated to upholding the principles of its founders while adapting to the demands of modern education.
