Overview of the Admission Process at Shrewsbury School

General Admission Steps

Initial Inquiry and Visit:

Families are encouraged to start their journey by visiting the school during Open Days or arranging a bespoke visit. This includes a tour of the school, meetings with staff, and interactions with current students.

Registration:

Prospective students must be registered before sitting for entrance examinations. Registration involves completing an application form and paying a registration fee.

Entrance Examinations:

13+ and 14+ Applicants:

Students take entrance exams in subjects like Maths, English, and French (if studied for more than a year). These exams are typically taken in November for entry the following September. Exams can be administered at Shrewsbury School, the applicant’s current school, or other approved locations.

16+ Applicants:

Students take entrance exams in four subjects of their choice and are interviewed by an Admissions Tutor. These exams are also taken under strict conditions, and results are communicated within two weeks.

Interviews and References:

Applicants are interviewed, preferably in person during a school visit. If an in-person visit is not possible, a Zoom interview can be arranged. Additionally, academic and character references from the applicant’s current school are required.

Offer and Acceptance:

Offers are made based on exam results, interviews, and references. Offers are unconditional once all criteria are met. Upon receiving an offer, families must complete a parent contract and pay a deposit to secure the place.

Visa and Guardianship (for International Students)

International students who do not hold a British passport will require a Child Student visa. The school provides a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number for the visa application. Additionally, international students must have a guardian in the UK who can accommodate them during holidays and exeats.

Special Considerations

Special Educational Needs:

Parents must disclose any special educational needs or disabilities during the application process and provide relevant reports. Failure to disclose such information may result in the withdrawal of a school place.
