At Shrewsbury School, the house system is at the heart of the community, creating a welcoming environment for students. With 12 houses, including 7 boys’ houses and 5 girls’ houses, the school accommodates both boarding and day students. Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress, along with a resident Matron, an Assistant Housemaster/mistress, and a team of 8+ House Tutors, creating a sense of family and belonging. The houses are comfortable and well-maintained, offering shared rooms until the 6th form, after which students have individual rooms.

Accommodation

The school strives to provide a “home from home” environment through its house system, fostering a sense of community and belonging. With dedicated housemasters and housemistresses, along with a team of house tutors, students receive support and guidance akin to an extended family. The cozy and well-maintained houses offer shared rooms until the 6th form, ensuring a close-knit living experience. As students progress, they are allocated single rooms, further enhancing their independence and privacy.

Dining

In the purpose-built Kingsland Hall (KH), students are treated to meals cooked from scratch using fresh ingredients and local suppliers. The dining options include two hot meat choices, a vegetarian option, soup and bread, a salad bar, a fresh fruit and yoghurt bar, and a hot dessert. This ensures that students have a variety of nutritious and delicious options to choose from, promoting healthy eating habits and catering to diverse culinary preferences.

Recreation

Shrewsbury School boasts an array of recreational facilities and activities, including a boathouse, cricket center, Astroturfs, tennis courts, squash courts, sports hall, fitness suite, swimming pool, and fives courts. Additionally, students can participate in various clubs and societies dedicated to sports, music, drama, and academic interests. The school’s location near the River Severn and the Shropshire Hills offers opportunities for outdoor activities, further enriching the recreational experiences available to students.

Academic Support

The school’s comprehensive academic support is provided through a personal tutor system, ensuring that each student receives individualized guidance and assistance. Continuously evaluating and adapting its curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices, Shrewsbury School prioritizes students’ social and academic needs. The District Curriculum Accommodation Plan outlines strategies to provide equal access to the educational program, including accommodations within the general education program. Moreover, instructional and student support teams, along with early intervention teams, review data and make recommendations for accommodations, reaffirming the school’s commitment to fostering academic success and well-being.

In summary, Shrewsbury School offers a nurturing and comprehensive boarding experience, characterized by well-designed accommodation, high-quality dining services, extensive recreational facilities, and robust academic support systems, all aimed at ensuring the well-being and success of its students.
