Boarding

How Boarding Works

St Peter’s School welcomes boarders from Year 7 onwards. Students can stay for the full academic year or choose a flexible arrangement, spending two to five nights weekly—an option available through Year 11. International students seeking a taste of British education have shorter alternatives: they might join for one or two terms, or participate in the four-week summer programme that offers genuine immersion into campus life and York’s distinctive atmosphere.

Since September 2026, three boarding houses have been operating. Dronfield accommodates senior girls, Linton houses Sixth Form boys, while The Manor serves as a co-ed residence for Years 7–11. Each building hosts between 30 and 40 students.

Rooms and Facilities

The residences sit close to the main building and feature common lounges, study areas, computer rooms, music practice spaces, and kitchens stocked with fresh fruit, cereals, milk, and snacks. Each house is run by a married couple who also teach at the school, with some families living on-site alongside their children and pets—creating a genuinely homely environment. Matrons and laundry staff provide additional support, ensuring daily routines run smoothly.

Daily Routine and Activities

Morning begins around 7:00–7:30, with breakfast served in the dining hall before classes start. Sundays bring the popular late brunch from 10:00 to 12:00, drawing all boarders together. After lessons finish at 16:00, students attend clubs before gathering for communal supper between 17:15 and 18:15—a chance for siblings in different houses to reconnect. Saturday wraps up at midday for younger years, extending slightly for those with afternoon sports. Evening entertainment ranges from pizza nights and film screenings to trips exploring Whitby, North York Moors, and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Support and Care at St Peter’s School

Qualified nurses and paramedics maintain round-the-clock presence under the medical service manager’s supervision, while the school doctor holds appointments at a nearby clinic with two daily slots reserved for boarders. Beyond housemasters and matrons, students can approach an Independent Listener or visit the Wellbeing Hub for psychological support. Parents may visit weekdays from 16:00 to 18:00, taking children out for dinner or theatre. However, four annual exeat weekends see houses close from Friday afternoon until Sunday evening at 18:00, requiring families to arrange alternative accommodation in advance.
