Early Years System

The youngest learners begin their journey with the Early Years Foundation Stage, covering ages three to five. In nursery, three-year-olds discover the world through play, which awakens their natural curiosity. During Reception, four-year-olds start building foundations in reading, writing, and numeracy. The framework centers on seven key areas: personal and social development, communication and language, physical development, mathematics, understanding the world, expressive arts, and early Spanish literacy. Native English-speaking teachers create a warm atmosphere in modern classrooms equipped with play and sports zones.

Primary Years at The British School of Almeria

Primary education spans ages five to eleven, divided into two stages. During the first stage—Years 1 and 2—children master reading, writing, and arithmetic through practical activities and educational games. From Years 3 to 6, the curriculum broadens to encompass science, history, geography, art, and technology. The National Curriculum includes English, mathematics, music, and physical education, along with:

  • Thematic blocks (science, art, geography, and history)
  • Information and communication technology
  • Social studies in Spanish
  • Spanish language

Secondary School

At this level, students prepare for internationally recognized qualifications through three distinct stages. During the first two years—Key Stage 3—they receive comprehensive education across a broad range of subjects. This leads into two years of IGCSE preparation, with certificates confirming completion of lower secondary education. Upon finishing Year 11, graduates earn dual qualifications: British and Spanish. The program combines core subjects—English, mathematics, science, French or German, physical education, Spanish, and social studies—with two electives:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Information technology
  • Art
  • Music
  • Physical education (GCSE course)
  • Media studies
  • Business

Sixth Form

This final stage prepares sixteen- to eighteen-year-olds for university. Students select three to four A-Level subjects based on their interests and future specialization, studying them in depth over two years. This approach develops critical thinking, discipline, and responsibility for one’s own learning. Subject choices include:

  • English (literature/language), Spanish
  • Mathematics
  • Biology, chemistry, physics
  • History, geography
  • Business
  • Art, music, media studies
  • Information technology, physical education
  • French, German

After completing the course, students take A-Level exams—highly valued by universities worldwide—plus the Spanish EBAU test. This enables graduates to enter prestigious institutions in Spain (Málaga, Madrid, Almería, Murcia) and abroad: England, Ireland, the Netherlands, the USA, Belgium, Germany, France, and Slovakia. The British School of Almeria belongs to the National Association of British Schools in Spain and enjoys full recognition from the Ministry of Education.
