Description

University of Essex

An English university founded during the era of student protests and bold educational rethinking—one that grew into a leading center for social sciences across Europe.

About the University

Started in 1964, University of Essex sits in Colchester, England’s oldest town, where its main campus covers 200 acres of parkland in Wivenhoe—less than an hour from London. The place now serves over 10,000 students from more than 140 countries while employing around 800 teachers, yet it remains fundamentally research-focused despite this scale.

University of Essex Rankings

Recent years have brought significant advancement: the 2026 Guardian ranking placed it 12th, a jump of 13 positions from the previous year, while Complete University Guide 2026 positioned it 29th among 130 British universities. The social sciences show particular strength—politics and international studies appear in the global QS top-100, with four disciplines reaching the UK top-10 for research quality (REF 2021). Meanwhile, 86% of graduates find employment or continue studying, according to Graduate Outcomes 2025.

Academic Programs

This research orientation shapes the structure itself: three main faculties—humanities, health and sciences, and social sciences—house dozens of schools and departments, including:

  • Business and law: Essex Business School (AACSB accredited), School of Law
  • Arts: East 15 acting school, Edge Hotel School
  • Science and health: Computing & Electronic Engineering, Life Sciences, Psychology, Health and Care
  • Social sciences: Economics, Politics, Sociology and Criminology

Besides regular degrees, exchange programs link students with partners across 40 nations, while internships span the UK and other countries. Summer schools and online courses expand accessibility, and Languages for All provides free language instruction—from Arabic and Korean to Russian and Chinese.

Student Life and Career

University life revolves around 165 clubs and societies, including 44 sports clubs under Essex Blades with 4,500 participants, the V-Team volunteer program, and Rebel media platform. Career support extends beyond graduation through CareerHub, which provides consultations, CV360 and Interview360 tools, mentorship, and the Essex Startups platform. Alumni returning for postgraduate study receive discounts up to 33%.

Campuses

The Colchester campus encompasses 200 acres of Green Flag-awarded parkland, with a 1,655-seat sports arena, wall for climbing, and 40 acres of outdoor facilities. Nine accommodation options range from tower blocks to townhouses, with utilities, internet, and sports membership included. The second campus occupies Loughton’s Georgian Hatfields mansion, home to East 15 acting school—about half an hour from central London via the Central line, creating a completely unique rhythm and atmosphere.
