Campus

Location

Nestled in Somerset near Sparkford village, Hazlegrove Prep School occupies 200 acres of parkland that stretches across the hills and forests of southwest England. At its heart stands Hazlegrove House, an 18th-century mansion completed in 1735. The building has served as the school’s home since 1947, and when the King’s Bruton Foundation acquired the estate in 1953, it enabled the development of modern facilities that now complement this historic core.

Sport

The campus features a 25-meter indoor pool with five lanes, alongside a sports hall and two all-weather pitches—one of them floodlit for evening use. Eight permanent cricket nets, a synthetic long jump pit, and two squash courts expand the athletic options available to students.

Beyond these, there’s a six-hole golf course with two illuminated driving nets, plus tennis and netball courts. A mirrored dance studio with an adjoining theater ensures that pupils can develop both their sporting abilities and creative talents within the same grounds.

Educational Infrastructure

The main teaching building, Fitzjames, was opened by the Countess of Wessex and houses science laboratories fully refurbished in 2021. It also contains specialized classrooms for art, design, technology, and Food Technology, while additional teaching blocks—Moberly and the John Cann Centre—are distributed across campus.

Pre-Prep deserves particular mention: this dedicated building for younger pupils features its own playground where giant xylophone bells, a play fort, and the Bandstand gazebo create spaces for outdoor learning that blend structure with imagination.

Boarding Houses at Hazlegrove Prep School

Three boarding houses share the campus: Blackford House accommodates girls from grades 3 to 8, Lankester House welcomes younger boys in rooms themed around King Arthur legends, while School House occupies the historic building and hosts older students. More than 25 adults live on-site—including housemasters with their families—and at least four adults are on duty each evening to support over 100 boarders.

Common rooms with billiards and relaxation zones, a garden with swings at Blackford House, plus rabbits and guinea pigs that children help care for—all of this cultivates an atmosphere that feels genuinely familial rather than institutional.
