Music

Eighteen music teachers at Hazlegrove Prep School cover everything from piano and vocals to orchestral instruments, electric guitar, bagpipes, drums, and even DJing. The rotational system for individual lessons ensures these sessions don’t clash with core classes, while students prepare for ABRSM and Trinity exams, including theory at level 5. From Year 2 onwards, children spend an entire term learning violin with a specialist—by which point many already sing in harmony and handle basic instrumental patterns.

Ensembles and Choirs at Hazlegrove Prep School

The school runs senior and junior orchestras alongside a string ensemble, wind orchestra, percussion group, and six rock and pop bands—one of which recently performed on local radio. Meanwhile, choirs form part of the mandatory timetable from Years 3 to 6, regularly performing at Wells Cathedral and Sherborne Abbey. Every Friday, young musicians showcase their progress in concerts that demonstrate the high standard they’ve reached.

Theatre

Drama at Hazlegrove is led by the Head of Theatre, who works weekly with all junior classes on improvisation, movement, and dance. Productions take place in the school’s main theatre, complete with full costumes and lighting. From Year 2, children can also take individual or group lessons in speech and acting during the school day—parents simply coordinate timing with the class teacher at the start of each term.

Creative Scholarships

Over the past four years, Hazlegrove Prep School graduates have secured 116 scholarships and awards across 16 senior schools—18 in art and design, 15 in drama, and 8 in music. The school’s preparation programme supports all creative disciplines, with music scholarships proving particularly strong: recent leavers have been recognized for horn, piano, composition, and music technology. This encouragement allows each child to explore their interests thoroughly before moving on.
