Nursery and Reception

Hazlegrove Prep School welcomes children from age two. Through play and creative expression, they develop communication skills alongside physical coordination, emotional awareness, literacy, and basic mathematics. Music teachers, ballet instructors, and swimming coaches join the care team from the very first weeks, while students access a 25-meter indoor pool, weekly Forest School sessions, a drama studio, and sports fields. Once they move into Reception, phonics lessons begin—children start writing their first words and participate in school assemblies, building foundations that will support them throughout their education.

Grades 1–2

Mornings focus on English, mathematics, and phonics when children’s concentration peaks. Teachers tailor assignments to individual needs while assistants work with small groups, ensuring everyone receives attention. After lunch, practical activities take over—students cook over campfires and solve challenges in Forest School, rehearse dances, and join dramatic productions led by a theater director. Each week, secondary school specialists teach physical education, including gymnastics, ball skills, and team games, complemented by tennis, golf, and ballet sessions with professional coaches.

Grades 3–6

In Grades 3–4, children learn in mixed-year groups where form tutors handle morning sessions in mathematics, English, and humanities, though ability-based grouping applies to maths and spelling. Subjects interconnect naturally—students explore the school forest, compose scientific reports, create imaginative illustrations, and mummify tomatoes to understand Ancient Egypt. By Grades 5–6, projects grow more complex as they design solar farms for campus grounds, develop nutrition presentations, and debate moral questions during philosophy lessons. Specialists guide them through a broad curriculum that develops both creative and critical thinking.

Specialized subjects include:

  • science
  • French
  • art
  • design
  • music
  • drama
  • programming

Grades 7–8 at Hazlegrove Prep School

The upper years prepare students for secondary school admission through mock exams, interview practice, and scholarship programs across academics, art, design, drama, music, and sports. From Grade 4 onward, staff guide families through selecting boarding or day schools—single-sex or co-educational—drawing on extensive knowledge of the British system. Meanwhile, the personal development curriculum addresses adolescent challenges: students discuss psychological wellbeing, learn stress management, and examine cyberbullying and online data protection. By thirteen, Hazlegrove Prep School graduates leave confident and mature, ready for exams and new environments, capable of managing their time, belongings, and homework independently.
