Why Computer Science at Heriot-Watt

Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh launched its Computer Science programs over 50 years ago, becoming one of the country’s pioneers in the field. Today it ranks first in Scotland for Computer Science, hosting the National Robotarium—a global center for robotics and AI—alongside the £19 million GRID complex, which houses VR labs and a dedicated game development studio.

BSc Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence)

This four-year bachelor’s program is accredited by BCS and the Chartered Institute for IT, meaning its diploma carries international recognition. Students tackle a year-long team project in AI during their third year, then complete a dissertation in their fourth, choosing specializations that range from machine learning to digital forensics.

BSc Computer Science (Cyber Security)

The Cyber Security bachelor’s covers everything from network analysis and encryption to intrusion detection and defense against threats spanning infrastructure attacks to personal data breaches. Beyond core modules, students can opt for Go Global—an international semester in Dubai or at German partner institution OTH, where additional electives explore related disciplines.

BSc Games Development and Production

Edinburgh is home to Rockstar North, Epic Games, and Unity Technologies, and Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh offers its Games Development and Production bachelor’s right in this creative hub. Led by a Scottish BAFTA laureate, the course gives students access to GRID’s exclusive Games Studio, where they take projects from concept through to release.

Career paths for graduates:

  • UI/UX designer
  • Systems, graphics, or AI programmer
  • Producer, scriptwriter
