Exploring the Rich History

Nestled in the heart of Ely, King’s Ely School stands as a testament to centuries of learning. As students, we’re drawn into its rich history, a tale woven into the fabric of time. Founded in 970 A.D., it traces its roots back to the boy choristers of the Isle of Ely, a legacy steeped in the origins of Christianity. Over the years, the school evolved, adapting to the winds of change that swept through England.

A Royal Connection

In 1541, under the reign of King Henry VIII, King’s Ely received a royal charter, marking its formal recognition as a College of Canons. The ties with the cathedral grew stronger, anchoring the school in the heart of religious life. Renamed The King’s School, Ely, it stood as one of the seven King’s Schools, a testament to its enduring legacy. Subsequent royal charters from Queen Elizabeth I and King Charles II cemented its place in history.

Embracing Change

The 1970s ushered in a new era as King’s Ely opened its doors to girls, embracing a spirit of inclusivity. Queen Elizabeth II’s visit marked this momentous occasion, heralding the first Queen’s Scholar. With each passing year, the student body grew more diverse, reflecting the evolving landscape of education.

A Modern Institution

Today, King’s Ely stands as a beacon of education, catering to the needs of over a thousand students. From nursery to sixth form, it offers a comprehensive curriculum, nurturing young minds to reach their full potential. The emphasis on personal development fosters a culture of independence, where students chart their own academic journeys.

A Vibrant Community

Beyond the classrooms, King’s Ely buzzes with activity. Music, drama, art, and sports breathe life into the campus, enriching the student experience. The Ely Scheme opens doors to outdoor adventures, fostering a love for nature and exploration. With each extracurricular pursuit, students discover new passions and talents.

Historic Charms

The campus itself is a testament to history, with buildings dating back centuries. School House, touted as Europe’s oldest residential building, stands as a living relic of the past. The proximity to Ely Cathedral adds a touch of grandeur, providing a picturesque backdrop for school events and performances.
