Foundation

When Reverend Thomas Langhorne leased Loretto House in Musselburgh in 1827, he established Scotland’s first exclusively boarding institution, creating an environment where 69 boys would eventually study by 1862. After purchasing the building within two years, he built something beyond a mere classroom—this was a space where children absorbed traditions through shared rhythms of daily life, making round-the-clock residence fundamental to everything that followed.

Loretto School Philosophy

Hely Hutchinson Almond acquired the school in 1862 and introduced a revolutionary triad: developing mind, body, and spirit as one unified whole. His boy government system allowed younger students to become class and room monitors before advancing to prefect roles. By his death in 1903, enrollment had reached 136, while his guiding principle remained clear—Loretto School should be not the strongest, but the wisest and finest.

Architectural Milestones

Alumni funds built the first chapel in 1892, which expanded eastward in 1965 with John Lawrie’s stained glass adorning it. Between 1979 and 1997, the campus gained a RIBA award-winning theatre, gymnasium, music school, and IT centre. The 2002 opening of Loretto Golf Academy—the first among independent schools—culminated thirteen years later when Sam Torrance OBE inaugurated its indoor facility, cementing the school’s specialization.

Transition to Coeducation

September 1981 marked a new era as Loretto School welcomed 24 girls into Sixth Form, housing them in converted Trafalgar Lodge. Headmaster David McMurray insisted on complete integration—students shared dining tables, attended classes together, and participated in CCF alongside cultural activities. Since then, female enrollment has grown steadily until today, when girls nearly equal boys in number.
