Founding and Early Influence
The students at Annie Wright Schools recount the origins of their school with a sense of pride. Established in 1884 by Charles Barstow Wright and Bishop John A. Paddock, the school was first named Annie Wright Seminary, in tribute to Charles Wright’s daughter, Annie. It stood as one of the inaugural cultural institutions in Tacoma, focused on the education of pioneers’ daughters from the surrounding regions.
Growth and Tradition
From the onset with 46 students and ten faculty members, the school offered comprehensive educational packages, which included boarding and tuition for classical and modern subjects at a yearly fee. The first building was strategically positioned at 611 Division Avenue, opposite Wright Park. As the student community expanded, the necessity for a bigger space led to the construction of a new campus at 827 North Tacoma Avenue in 1924, where the school still operates. This era also saw the beginnings of many school traditions, like the May Day celebration initiated in 1912.
Evolution and Diversification
Through the mid-20th century, significant changes occurred. The school was renamed Annie Wright School in 1971, reflecting its broader educational approach, including the introduction of co-educational classes up to the upper elementary levels. Additionally, the school began admitting boys into its kindergarten in the 1930s and provided temporary housing for boys in the early elementary grades following the 1949 earthquake.
Embracing a Global Curriculum
Entering the 21st century, Annie Wright Schools adopted the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. By 2009, it had become an IB World School, offering a complete range of IB programs, including the Diploma, Primary Years, and Middle Years Programmes. This positioned the school as one of the select institutions nationally offering a full IB continuum.
Recent Developments and Expansion
In recent years, the school has continued to enhance its facilities and educational offerings. 2017 marked the opening of an Upper School for Boys, complementing the pre-existing Upper School for Girls. This expansion phase included new academic buildings and sports facilities, like a modern gym and an underground pool completed in 2019.
Present-Day Status
Today, Annie Wright Schools provide co-educational programs from preschool through grade 8 and separate upper schools for boys and girls, offering both day and boarding options. The school remains a cornerstone of education in Tacoma, delivering a rigorous academic program and a broad array of extracurricular activities to a diverse student body.
Throughout its history, Annie Wright Schools have consistently committed to delivering high-quality education, adapting to community needs while preserving its traditions and heritage.
