Additional Programs
Mount Kelly has built something rarely found at other British schools: a full-fledged business program woven into the senior timetable, mandatory mountain and coastal expeditions, and maritime ventures that stem from decades-old traditions. Through this approach, sixth formers develop entrepreneurship and strategic thinking, younger students spend weeks hiking and climbing, while cadets head out on ocean sailing expeditions.
- Sixth Form Business School — mandatory 124-hour annual module
- LOTC program with expeditions for each year group
- Duke of Edinburgh and Ten Tors marches across Dartmoor
- Naval Cadet Corps and tall ship sailing voyages
Business School
Sixth formers at Mount Kelly encounter the Business School not as an optional club but as a timetabled 124-hour annual commitment. While studying three A Levels, they complete the mandatory Electives & Enrichments module, which branches into four pathways covering business fundamentals—from company mechanics to marketing and personal branding—strategic use of technology, social ventures as launchpads for early entrepreneurial ideas, plus mindfulness and productivity. The philosophy here treats university as one option rather than the only route forward.
Outdoor Learning
Everyone from Year 7 through Year 11 participates in Learning Outside the Classroom, run by the on-campus Simply Outdoors center. Each year follows its own theme: seventh-years tackle team-building through raft construction, eighth-years learn survival skills with overnight camps and rabbit preparation, ninth-years head to Cornwall for coastal work with climbing and snorkeling. By Year 10, groups venture to North Wales, summit Snowdon, and visit the Ogwen mountain rescue base. Meanwhile, Prep students attend forest school twice weekly, navigating practical challenges and learning risk assessment outdoors.
Mount Kelly’s Maritime Tradition
The school inherited its naval legacy from Admiral Kelly, making the Naval CCF a natural fixture. Cadets complete full Royal Navy training—navigation, boat handling, sailing—grounded in discipline, courage, respect, and integrity. The Conway Sea Training Award, funded by the Conway Merchant Navy Trust, enables three to five sixth formers to join tall ship expeditions across Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Atlantic at no cost, counting toward the Gold DofE component. Since 1995, 255 Mount Kelly graduates have completed the 125-mile Devizes to Westminster kayak marathon.
