Georgian Heritage

Orwell Park School occupies a late 18th-century mansion that once belonged to Admiral Vernon, a naval hero, and Colonel Tomlin, who founded Felixstowe port. After relocating to Nacton in 1937 and cycling through three names since its 1868 founding, the historic building now stands alongside modern studios for art, design, and music recording. The Good Schools Guide describes it as a place where character forms quietly.

Orwell Park School Campus

Spanning 110 acres of parkland, the grounds include forests, playing fields, a nine-hole golf course, and access to the River Orwell estuary. Beyond a lit astroturf pitch, pool, and squash courts lies an obstacle course, while forest areas serve the OPS Challenge program—where students build fires and shelters. Pre-Prep classes spend weekly sessions here too, hunting insects, cooking over flames, and assembling wooden structures with tools.

OPS Challenge Program

This two-year Duke of Edinburgh–style program for Years 6 and 7 runs weekly hour-long sessions in orienteering, water rescue, raft building, kayaking, first aid, and sign language. Year 6 includes a two-day sailing course leading to Level 1 certification, followed by Beowulf camp and spring leadership activities with scuba diving. Students earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards by demonstrating resilience, honesty, and kindness throughout.

Childhood Protection

Orwell Park School centers its philosophy on protecting what it calls the “magic of childhood”—letting children learn, laugh, explore, and make mistakes while teachers champion each one’s interests. Since joining the Benenden Family of Schools in 2025, it has embraced authenticity and individuality. Five core values—Kindness, Collaboration, Courage, Spirit, Respect—support an overarching principle of Integrity that shapes curriculum, conduct, and home support across all levels.
