Why Fashion at LBU

Leeds Beckett University, specifically its Leeds School of Arts, carries 170 years of heritage and ranks 15th among British universities for fashion and textiles (The Guardian, 2025). Leeds itself has earned recognition as the north’s unofficial fashion capital, with major brand offices, retailers, and emerging designer studios clustered around the campus.

Campus and Partners at Leeds Beckett University

In recent years, the university has invested £80 million into a new city-center building that complements Broadcasting Place—recognized by CTBUH as one of the world’s finest high-rise structures. Through partnerships with Burberry, McQueen, and Fashion Revolution, Leeds Beckett University embeds students directly into real-world projects throughout their programs.

Fashion Design (BA)

The Fashion Design BA Honours program centers on a collaborative Burberry module, where students develop pattern-making skills and professional portfolios while working alongside brand representatives in the dedicated third-year studio. Graduate collections debut at the RUN show and LSA Degree Show, events where many students connect with their first clients.

  • Professor Matty Bovan—an internationally acclaimed designer—personally leads courses
  • Workshops feature industrial sewing machines, laser cutters, Clo3D, and Adobe Creative Suite

Fashion Communication (MA)

The Fashion Communication MA delivers a one-year program focused on visual and editorial communication: journalism, styling, short-form video, and multi-platform content creation. It structures itself around assignments from actual clients, while students access both analog and digital tools—from pop-up photo studios to digital printing facilities.

Graduates move into positions in:

  • content creation, styling, and PR
  • brand strategy and creative direction
  • independent studios and agencies

Fashion Marketing (BA)

The three-year Fashion Marketing & Enterprise BA Honours combines marketing theory with entrepreneurial practice, offering an optional additional year in industry. Students develop brands, analyze trends and markets, and build portfolios that prepare them equally for careers at major companies or launching their own labels.

Communication and Content in Fashion (BA)

A distinct pathway, the three-year BA Fashion Communication & Content at Leeds Beckett University also includes an optional industry placement year. Editorial projects, client-driven assignments, and comprehensive professional software shape a versatile skill set that translates across multiple platforms and formats.
